Ex-IPS and TMC candidate Humayun Kabir says he "fears for his own life," asks for enhanced security

Humayun Kabir, a decorated former IPS officer of the 2003 batch and outgoing Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA, has been assigned a high-stakes battle in the Domkal constituency for the 2026 Assembly elections. Known for his "tough cop" image and the high-profile arrest of criminals like 'Hatkata Dilip', Kabir has been moved by the party leadership from Debra to Domkal in Murshidabad. However, the homecoming to a district he once policed has been marred by a chilling admission: the former police chief now fears for his own life.

Upon reaching Murshidabad, Kabir immediately approached the District Superintendent of Police to request enhanced security. He alleged that a notorious "murder syndicate" head, whom he had targeted during his tenure as the district's SP, is still active and plotting to kill him. Having served five years in the district—two as SDPO Kandi and three as the district SP—Kabir claims to have intimate knowledge of the local criminal networks, asserting that his presence as a candidate has made him a direct target for these elements.

Domkal has a grim history of being one of the most volatile regions in West Bengal, frequently witnessing extreme political violence during election cycles. Kabir recalled that during his time as the SP, he managed to keep the crime rate low, but expressed concern that the demographics and current tensions make it a "sensitive" zone. Despite the perceived threat, he expressed his gratitude to Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee for trusting him with a familiar terrain, vowing to make his workers "sweat" for a victory.
